Law day 2019

new guidance for civility

The New York State Bar Association Committee on Attorney Professionalism has released new standards on attorney civility. While the standards are purely aspirational, in a statement Chief Judge DiFiore stated "civility and professionalism increase the effectiveness of the justice system and enhance the public’s trust in the legal profession."

Justice Louis Sangiorgio Supreme Court Law Intern Program

The Richmond County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) is now accepting applications for its law intern program. The program will be supervised by Administrative Judge of Richmond County, the Honorable Desmond Green. The Richmond County Bar Association VLP will select law students to participate in a six-week program, which will immerse them in the day-to-day business of the judicial system. Applicants must be either in their first or second year of law school. Interested students should fill out this application. Students are encouraged to learn more about the program before applying. Applications must be received by April 19, 2019.

On April 5, 2019, Judge Rajeswari will be part of a panel exploring the Stategic Plan implemented by the NYS Unified Court System, Office of Language Access to address the growing needs of thousands of individuals with limited English proficiency and discuss changing technology and resources needed to facilitate court interpreting. Lawyer Wellness and meditation

Lawyer jokes are a dime a dozen, but the mental welfare of attorneys is no laughing matter. A recent study found that "between 21 and 36 percent qualify as problem drinkers, and that approximately 28 percent, 19 percent, and 23 percent are struggling with some level of depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively." Appointed by Mayor Koch in 1983, Judge Alan J. Meyer, has served our island community with distinction. He presided over our Drug Treatment Court since 1999, and was Staten Island’s first Criminal Court Supervising Judge since becoming the 13th Judicial District. Staten Island Launches Innovative Court to Address Opioid Crisis

The New York City Criminal Court has designated a specialized part, AP7, to function as the Staten Island Heroin Overdose Prevention and Education (HOPE) 2.0/Overdose Avoidance and Recovery (OAR) Court. HOPE 2.0 and OAR will work collaboratively to address substance use and overdose risk for individuals charged with misdemeanors. The Staten Island HOPE 2.0/OAR Court will operate on Wednesdays. Coaches position:

The coaching position is a volunteer position. In the past coaches have met once a week with the team, sometimes more often as the tournament dates approach [Competition Materials Available Here].


Formal practice is on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:30pm and 4:30 pm. Students also meet on their own, both on campus and off campus, as the need arises. Other formal meetings may be required at the discretion of the coach(es). There are currently 20 team members, about half of which have been on the team for more than one season [Tournament Schedule Here].

In accordance with Section 212 of the Judiciary Law, the Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York will submit to the Legislature, the Governor, and the Chief Judge, not later than February 1, 2019, a report evaluating the state’s experience with electronic filing for the commencement of actions and proceedings and the service and filing of papers therein and containing such recommendations for further legislation as are deemed appropriate.

The Unified Court System welcomes the submission of comments about the implementation of the electronic filing program from the organized bar; legal services groups; public defenders; 18-B attorneys; unaffiliated attorneys; victims' rights organizations; persons in whose county a program has been implemented in any of the courts therein; unrepresented parties; and any other interested persons.

Comments received will be posted on the website of the Court System and included in the report. The report will also address such comments.
