Appellate Division, 2nd Department COMMEMORATES the 80th anniversary of its courthouse
On September 25, 2018, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore spoke at the Appellate Division, Second Department to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Appellate Division at its current location on Monroe Place. The Second Department has had three homes in its more than 100-year existence, all in historic downtown Brooklyn.
In its continuing effort to better serve its constituents, The Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department will hold its October 12, 2018, sitting at the Richmond County Court Complex, in the St. George section of Staten Island, New York. The October 12 court session will be presided over by Honorable Alan D. Scheinkman, who is the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department. Joining Presiding Justice Scheinkman on the bench will be Honorable William F. Mastro, the senior Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, who makes his home in Staten Island and is a familiar figure in the Richmond County legal community, Associate Justice Joseph J. Maltese, who, like Justice Mastro, lives in Staten Island and is well known to local attorneys, and Associate Justice Betsy Barros, whose chambers is just across the river in Kings County.
2018 Red mass
Richmond County's 35th Annual Red Mass was held on Tuesday, October 30th. The Homilist was The Most Reverend Bishop John O'Hara, the director of strategic planning for the archdiocese and once the Pastor of the Church of St. Teresa of the Infant Jesus on Staten Island. Family court annoucement
Beginning Monday, August 27, 2018, Judge Peter DeLizzo (Part 4), Court Attorney Referee Alexandra Byun (Part 40), Court Attorney Referee Janet McFarland (Part 42), and the Family Court Help Center will be relocating to 18 Richmond Terrace.
Effective August 27, 2018, Judge DeLizzo will be in Room 320.
Effective Tuesday, September 4, Court Attorney Referee Alexander Byun will be in Room 315.
From Monday, August 27 through Thursday, August 30, Court Attorney Referee Janet McFarland will be sitting in Part I at 100 Richmond Terrace. Effective Friday, August 31, she will be in Room 305 at 18 Richmond Terrace.
All Petitions and Motions for support, visitation, and custody and Orders of Protection and Writs must be filed at the Family Court Help Center which will be located at 18 Richmond Terrace on the 3rd Floor.
The Real Property Section of the New York State Bar Association is now accepting applications for the 2019 Tharp and Mitzner Scholarships. If you have know of a law student who would be interested in applying, please share the information below. The application deadline is December 3, 2018.
REAL PROPERTY LAW SECTION LORRAINE POWER THARP SCHOLARSHIP
This $5000 scholarship was created to honor the memory of Lorraine Power Tharp, who served as President of the NYSBA and Chair of the Real Property Law Section. The scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year law school student who best exemplifies the core values important to Lorraine: academic excellence, a demonstrated interest in public service, high integrity and, if possible, an interest in real property law.
Efforts will be made to honor Lorraine's commitment to gender equity and diversity in the profession. To ensure geographic diversity, the Foundation will strive to select students attending New York State law schools in different counties each year, so that over time students from all areas of the state will be able to benefit from the scholarship. A preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

REAL PROPERTY LAW SECTION MELVYN MITZNER SCHOLARSHIP
This $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time student enrolled in a New York State law school. It was created to honor the memory of Melvyn Mitzner, a legend in the New York real estate legal community. Mitzner is a former chair of the Real Property Law Section, and was an active and valued member of the Section for many years.
Efforts will be made to honor Mitzner’s commitment to professional achievement and to diversity in the profession. To ensure geographic diversity, the Foundation will strive to select students attending New York State law schools in different counties each year, so that over time students from all areas of the State will be able to benefit from the scholarship. A preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

2018 Golf and tennis outing
The 2018 Golf and Tennis outing has been scheduled for October 4th, rain or shine. We encourage everyone to support the RCBA by attending and/or providing a scholarship. Golf is limited to the first 72 players and RCBA Members have until September 10 to register and pay before it opens to the public on Sept 12.
