Temporary Protected Status Legal Clinic.

posted Jan 9, 2015, 1:06 PM by Pete Weinman
Thanks to our Immigration Chairman, Joseph Canepa, for forwarding the following:

On November 20, 2014, Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, announced his decision to designate nationals of those three countries for TPS for 18 months due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa. The designations mean that eligible nationals of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone (and people without nationality who last habitually resided in one of those three countries) will not be removed from the United States and are authorized to work and obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).

NYLAG is partnering with Council Member Andy King to provide application assistance for nationals of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea who are eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). At this clinic, NYLAG will be providing information about TPS including eligibility requirements and the benefits of TPS. Application assistance to eligible applicants will also be provided. Clinic volunteers are needed to assist with completing applications with attendees.  French language skills are appreciated. NYLAG staff will be on site to provide direct supervision of volunteers.

Mobile Legal Help Center Volunteer Opportunities

The Mobile Legal Help Center (MLHC) is the country’s first-ever legal services office and courtroom on wheels. On the MLHC, NYLAG staff provide counseling, advice, and direct representation without leaving the vehicle. A video link with the courts enables access to judges for emergency hearings, including domestic violence and eviction cases.

NYLAG staff will be conducting legal clinics aboard the MLHC on the dates listed below. We invite participation from volunteer attorneys, law graduates and law students to help us provide legal services. Volunteers conduct intake interviews with MLHC visitors, and provide information and brief advice on a variety of legal issues. All volunteers are supervised by a NYLAG staff attorney who assists with evaluation of the legal issues raised during intake, and provides any guidance and support volunteers may need. Volunteers will have access to a recording of a webinar training on the MLHC intake process and will be sent training materials and intake guides.
