Born Marie DeLauro in Brooklyn, she moved to West Brighton in 1954 and settled in Millburn in 2006.
Mrs. Bate worked for 17 years as a clerk in the audit department of the Depository Trust Company in Manhattan, retiring in 1987.
Mrs. Bate also designed custom wedding gowns for many years while living on Staten Island.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading and solving crossword puzzles.
Her husband of 17 years, Nicholas, died in 1964.
Surviving are her son, Salvatore; her brother, Eugene DeLauro; four sisters, Louise Fasano, Margaret Fin, Ann Massaro and Rose Licari, and two grandchildren.
