Hon. Thomas Aliotta
LIVINGSTON STREET — This week state Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti announced the appointment of Hon. Thomas Aliotta to the Appellate Term, Second, Eleventh and Thirteenth Judicial Districts, which hears appeals from the Criminal Court and the Civil Court in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Justice Aliotta will be filling a vacancy arising from the recent resignation of Justice Steinhardt, who is returning to her full-time duties in Brooklyn Supreme Court. The appointment, effective Jan. 1, was made with the approval of Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and in consultation with Acting Presiding Justice William F. Mastro of the Appellate Division Second Department.

In announcing the appointment, Judge Prudenti said, “Over the course of an extraordinary judicial career that spans nearly two decades, Justice Aliotta has earned a stellar reputation among members of the bench and bar for his legal acumen, fairness and temperament. His superb judicial skills, coupled with his unwavering commitment to the delivery of justice, make him ideally suited for this richly deserved appointment. I am delighted that New York’s appellate bench will now be able to benefit from his unparalleled dedication and prodigious talents.”

Justice Aliotta was elected to the Richmond County Civil Court in 1991, serving as the court’s supervising judge from 1997 to 2001. He was designated a Richmond County Supreme Court acting justice in 1999 and elected to the county’s Supreme Court bench in 2002. Prior to his ascendancy to the bench, Justice Aliotta headed a general law practice and early in his career served as an assistant district attorney in Richmond County. He earned his juris doctorate from Brooklyn Law School.

Judge Prudenti added, “The Appellate Term owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Justice Steinhardt for her loyal and dedicated service to the court, which she joined in 2008. I am pleased that the citizens of Kings County will continue to benefit from her extensive knowledge and experience as she resumes her full-time duties in Brooklyn’s Supreme Court.”

The Appellate Term is located in the Kings County Civil Court building at 141 Livingston St. in Downtown Brooklyn.
